Trad in the archives

He was the last of the itinerant fiddlers – and his legacy is being shared in an exclusive presentation at the Fleadh.

Join us for a special screening of Fiddler On The Road – the story of travelling fiddler and tinsmith Johnny Doherty. This beautiful documentary follows Johnny on the roads of Donegal, which was his arena.

TEENAGE ENERGY

According to Alex Monaghan in The Living Tradition magazine, he was a significant influence on the fiddle playing of The Chieftains and Altan.

Johnny’s friend Caoimhín MacAoidh recalled that even in his last days, Johnny could be seen and heard ‘thundering out The Black Fanad Mare with the energy of a teenager’.

Irish Music Review said of him, ‘There is no doubting that John Doherty’s passing in 1980 represented the end of an era’.
